A classic 4-day / 3-night, ~50 km alpine loop through one of Kosciuszko National Park’s most historically significant pastoral landscapes. Long Plain is not a single story — it is a layered cultural record spanning nearly 150 years of mountain life: from the earliest squatting runs of the 1830s through to the final grazing leases of the 1970s, all compressed into a stretch of treeless subalpine plain ringed by snowgum woodland and open sky.

Seven hut places mark the route — homesteads, working shelters and ruins — each representing a distinct chapter in the history of Australia’s high country. The walk traces an unbroken arc from Old Currango Homestead, the oldest surviving building in the national park, to Bill Jones Hut, built in 1952 and among the last grazing huts ever constructed on the plain. In between lie huts hidden in the treeline, ruins that only the plain remembers, and stock routes that no longer appear on standard maps.

The terrain is demanding and the weather often uncompromising — snow is always possible. What the walk offers in return is access to a landscape and a set of stories that cannot be experienced any other way.

  • Seven hut places spanning nearly 150 years — homesteads, working shelters and ruins, each a distinct chapter in the mountain cattlemen’s story
  • Two off-track sections to huts that don’t appear on standard maps
  • Home of brumbies, dingoes, eastern grey kangaroos and wedge-tailed eagles across the open plain
  • Training plan and pack‑list provided on booking
  • Qualified archaeologist/historian guides; small‑group pace with regular interpretive stops
  • Small group, bespoke experience: guide ratio of 1:3 for safety and quality

(4 Days / 3 Nights | ~50 km loop)

  • Day 1 — Rules Point → Cooinbil Homestead (~13 km) Meet at Rules Point / Long Plain Road for an alpine safety briefing and introduction to the plain’s history. The route follows valley trails south, taking in Long Plain Homestead and the ruins of Hedgers Hut before reaching camp at Cooinbil Homestead.
  • Day 2 — Cooinbil Homestead → Old Currango Homestead via Harris Hut and Bill Jones Hut (~16 km) The most demanding and historically significant day. The Harris Hut Horse Trail — the original track onto Cooleman Plain — skirts the edge of Mt Skanes, passing the ruins of Harris Hut and Bill Jones Hut before arriving at Old Currango Homestead, the oldest surviving building in Kosciuszko National Park.
  • Day 3 — Old Currango Homestead → Hainsworth Hut (~9 km) A shorter day through Mountain Ash and snowgum woodland along the Mosquito Creek Trail, dropping down onto Long Plain and its frost hollows to camp near Hainsworth Hut.
  • Day 4 — Hainsworth Hut → Rules Point (~12 km) The return leg crosses Long Plain before descending to Ghost Gully and the Port Phillip Trail. A final visit to Millers Hut, a crossing of the Murrumbidgee River, and a celebratory lunch back at Long Plain Homestead before returning to vehicles.

Exact route may vary with weather, conditions and group ability. Please note Long Plain Road is closed during heavy snow — vehicles visiting this area of Kosciuszko National Park are required to carry snow chains.
